Midjourney Output Specifications and Ratios
Specify where the image will be used before generation. Wrong ratios can cut off subjects, remove title space and make platform adaptation difficult.
#Decide in order
Choose the cover/poster/social/landscape use case, then the ratio, then composition and whitespace. --ar 16:9 alone does not explain why landscape is useful.
| Ratio | Typical use |
|---|---|
1:1 | Square social images and avatars |
4:5 | Feed graphics |
16:9 | Course headers, covers and thumbnails |
9:16 | Portrait video covers and stories |
The source describes a square default and the --ar / --aspect controls. Confirm behavior in the selected version.
#Ratio changes the composition
Landscape needs left/right information flow; portrait needs vertical structure and top/bottom crop safety; 4:5 balances density and subject clarity; squares often favor a central focal point.
Reserve title space explicitly, check thumbnails, choose a primary platform and keep important elements inside the safe area.
textUse case: course hero Ratio: 16:9 Need: clear focal point, safe crop area, negative space for headline
#Reuse across platforms
Optimize for the primary destination and create a small number of derived versions. One image should not be assumed to crop perfectly everywhere.
#Large or print output
The source records an upscaled V7 square example of 2048 x 2048 px. Treat that as version-specific. Check the actual exported dimensions against the final print size, any enlargement requirement and later Photoshop work.
Before every brief, record the destination, target ratio and required title/action space.
