Hugging Face Inference
Separate shared/provider routing, dedicated hosted endpoints and local/self-hosted services. Their control, performance and cost profiles differ.
#Provider access
Configure a token with the current permissions required by the selected inference service. Do not assume a generic read-only model-download token authorizes paid inference.
The original guide contains an older api-inference.huggingface.co/models/... URL. Prefer the currently documented provider/SDK route rather than treating that historical endpoint as universal.
pythonimport os from huggingface_hub import InferenceClient client = InferenceClient(token=os.environ["HF_TOKEN"]) # Select a model/provider actually supported by your account and task: # text = client.text_generation("The capital of France is", model=MODEL_ID) # image = client.text_to_image("An astronaut riding a horse", model=IMAGE_MODEL_ID)
This is a configuration fragment; model IDs and account authorization are prerequisites. No provider call was made during preparation of this guide.
#Embedding extraction
A supported feature-extraction model can return vectors for retrieval. Verify task support, pooling/normalization and actual output shape instead of assuming every BGE model is hosted on every provider or has the same dimensions.
#Dedicated endpoints
Dedicated infrastructure may provide hardware selection, scaling and access controls. Provisioning can incur hardware charges even without user requests; check the actual service configuration and pricing.
#Local or self-hosted services
Compatible clients can also target suitable local/self-hosted inference servers. Keep endpoint compatibility and authentication explicit.
#Reliability
Plan for rate limits, cold starts, variable model availability and transient failures. Batching and caching can help where the workload and service support them. Check errors and response schemas rather than returning any JSON body as a successful result.
