Gemini Models

Model names change. Understand the role of each family, then check Google's current model documentation before selecting a production dependency.

#Family-level roles

  • Pro: more demanding reasoning and complex tasks.
  • Flash: a speed/cost balance for many interactive workflows.
  • Flash-Lite: budget- and scale-oriented workloads.
  • Preview / Experimental: exploration rather than an assumed long-term dependency.

These are selection heuristics, not guarantees for every version.

#Match the candidate to the task

For low-latency interaction and routine workflows, test a Flash candidate first. Complex code understanding, long agent workflows or difficult multimodal analysis may justify testing Pro. Batch extraction and relatively simple high-volume requests may suit a Lite option.

#Handle preview dependencies deliberately

Use preview models for benchmarks and exploration, avoid hard-coding them as permanent defaults, and prepare fallback and migration plans.

#Compare with a small task benchmark

  1. Select ten to twenty representative real tasks.
  2. Run each candidate on the same inputs.
  3. Record quality, latency, cost and structured-output reliability.
  4. Choose the default based on the results.

Ask whether Pro is necessary, how much quality Flash loses and whether that difference justifies the cost. Comparing vendor reputations is less useful than evaluating the actual workload.
