Nice to Have

  • Have technical background (CS degree or self-taught programming ability)
  • Understand the special challenges of productizing LLM/GenAI (illusion, safety, cost)
  • Experience with SaaS or platform-based products

A Day in the Life

  • Morning: Analyze user behavior data for AI features—usage, satisfaction, and feedback
  • Morning: Review the evaluation results of the new model with the data science team and discuss whether it meets the launch standards
  • Afternoon: User interviews – understanding customers’ pain points and expectations when using AI recommendation features
  • Afternoon: Write the next iteration of PRD - an AI-assisted data analysis function that includes product specifications and model requirements
  • Evening: Discuss cost optimization options for AI inference services with engineering leaders

Career Transition Guide

Suitable Backgrounds

  • Product Manager (traditional direction): core PM capabilities are directly applicable and supplemented with AI/ML knowledgeSee this career today: Product Manager · Product Owner · Technical Product Manager
  • Data Analyst: Data-driven thinking and analytical capabilities are the core competencies of AI PMSee this career today: Data Analyst
  • UX designer: User experience design capabilities are more critical in AI productsSee this career today: UI/UX Designer
  • Data Scientists/ML Engineers: If you want to move from technology to products, AI PM is the ideal bridgeSee this career today: Senior Data Scientist · ML Engineer

Transition Path

  1. Step 1: Learn the basic concepts of ML/AI - you don’t need to write models, but you need to be able to communicate effectively with data scientists
  2. Step 2: Study 10+ successful AI product cases (such as Notion AI, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) and analyze product decisions
  3. Step 3: Drive an AI function from concept to launch in the current product and accumulate end-to-end experience
  4. Step 4: Learn the design patterns unique to AI products: uncertainty handling, human-AI collaboration, feedback loops
  5. Step 5: Prepare AI product cases and portfolio, and apply for AI PM positions in technology companies

Learning Roadmap

Phase 1: AI product awareness (January-February)

Learn basic ML/AI concepts and common terminology (course for PMs)Study 10+ AI product cases and analyze their product decisions and user experience designComplete the Prompt Master course and experience the boundaries of AI capabilities firsthand

Phase 2: AI PM skills (2-4 months)

Learn how to write requirements documents for AI products (how to describe model requirements and evaluation criteria)Master the user experience design patterns of AI products (uncertainty, transparency, control)Understand cost models and optimization strategies for AI products

Phase 3: Practical accumulation (April-June)

Drive an AI feature from concept to launchLearn AB testing and effectiveness measurement methods for AI productsUnderstand AI ethics and responsible AI practices at the product level

Common Mistakes

Wrong

Treat AI as omnipotent – let the model do things beyond its capabilities

Right

Understand the capabilities boundaries of the model and design fallback solutions and user prompts for uncertain outputs

Wrong

Only focus on the launch of functions, not on the continuous monitoring and iteration of AI functions after they are launched

Right

AI functions require continuous monitoring of model performance, user feedback, and data changes, and require more operations than traditional functions

Wrong

Completely rely on the data science team to make product decisions

Right

AI PM needs to have his own judgment - good model indicators do not mean good product experience
