  3. In-depth understanding of LLM principles (Attention mechanism, Tokenization, context window) and mainstream model APIs (GPT-4o, Claude 4, Gemini 2.0)
  4. Understand the full RAG stack: vector database (Pinecone/Weaviate/Qdrant/pgvector), Embedding model, retrieval strategy (HyDE, Reranking)
  5. Familiar with AI Agent framework (LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, Claude Agent SDK) and Function Calling / Tool Use / MCP
  6. Proficient in using AI Coding tools - at least 2 of Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Kiro, able to configure project-level AI rules files (.cursorrules/CLAUDE.md), and have practical experience in Vibe Coding (natural language-driven development)
  7. Master MLOps and deployment pipelines: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, model version management
  8. Familiar with at least one of the cloud platforms (AWS SageMaker / Azure AI / GCP Vertex AI)
  9. Have taken at least one AI system from zero to production - the OpenAI interview directly requires a research paper to analyze limitations and propose improvement plans

Common Mistakes

Wrong

I think AI Engineer only needs to be able to adjust the API and does not need to understand the underlying principles.

Right

The OpenAI interview will give you a paper and let you analyze the limitations on the spot - you need to understand principles such as Attention and context windows to pass

Wrong

I can only do demos and don’t care about the stability, cost and evaluation of the production environment.

Right

In 2026, the market will reward "production skills" rather than "academic qualifications" - being able to run, be stable, and be able to calculate costs are the core values

Wrong

Only proficient in one direction (such as RAG only) and do not know other AI engineering skills

Right

AI Engineer is a composite role - Prompt + RAG + Agent + Evaluation + Deployment must be mastered in order to independently deliver a complete system

Wrong

Ignore traditional software engineering foundations and only pursue new frameworks and new models

Right

Solid back-end engineering capabilities (API design, database, Docker/K8s, CI/CD, testing) are the foundation for the reliable operation of AI systems

Wrong

Don’t pay attention to vertical domain knowledge and think “general AI skills” are enough

Right

75%+ of AI positions require depth of field - finance, medical care, and e-commerce each have special needs, and AI engineers who understand business have a 28% premium.

Wrong

Only look at the basic salary figures and ignore new salary components such as reasoning and computing power

Right

In 2026, the Token budget has become the fourth component of salary (basic salary + bonus + equity + computing power) - engineers with unlimited AI access can achieve 8 times the output

Wrong

Without using AI Coding tools, I feel that handwriting code is the "real engineer"

Right

In 2026, 70%+ of AI Engineer's daily coding will be completed through Cursor/Claude Code - no AI tools = voluntarily giving up 3-5 times efficiency improvement, and interviews will also test the ability to use AI tools
